Teresa's Wedding Day: 12 Feb 1971, Lutherville, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA
This is a picture of Mary Teresa Creagh on her wedding day. This was taken as she was coming down the stairs at Bel Haven Farms where she worked as a housekeeper. Mr. & Mrs. Fisher were more like parents then employers as they always were looking out for her best interests.
Teresa was born the 7th of April 1949 in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary Ireland. She lived there until she was 18 years old and went to live in the United States. She was 18 on the Friday and left for the U.S. on Monday.
There is an interesting story surrounding her birthday. All the official documents record her birthday as the 7th of April. However, her mother always insisted she was born on Monday the 4th. Since all babies were baptized on Friday, her baptismal certificate would read the 8th regardless of the actual day during the week.
In order to come to the U.S., she needed to get her parents' permission. Because she was afraid they would not give her permission, she and her brother Pat fooled her father into signing a paper that became the needed permission. A year or so later, her father asked her if he had signed her away to America and she confessed that she and Pat had tricked him. She let him know that she was very happy and he definitely had not "signed her away."
During her flight to America, she met a wonderful woman by the name of Gertrude "Gertie" Harrison. Gertie remained her great friend and confidant until Gerties passing.
Early Childhood: 1953, Nenagh, Tipperary, Munster, Ireland
This was written around 2015 while living at 1503 Kings Row in Johnson City, Tn.
I was born and raised for 18 years in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary Ireland. I was born at 83 St. Josephs Park, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, Ireland in 1949, to Mary Kate Ryan and James Creagh. I was the 7th child. I was named Mary Teresa.
We lived at 83 until 1954 or late 1953 and then moved to 2 St. Josephs Park. Around the corner and down the street about 100 yards. My grandfather Ryan was still living when we moved.
I remember when we moved to No. 2, we had no electricity. It had small three bedrooms as 83 only had two bedrooms and now there were nine children living there. Kath was still living with Granny Ryan, my Mother's Mother.
I started at St. Mary's school the day I was 4 years old. My sister Ena, her nickname for Pauline, would take me and then came home at 12:30 for for lunch every day. Mammy always had it ready for us. The girls came home at 12:30 and the boys came at 1:00 so we would be gone by the time they came in for lunch. I would go with Ena to get the milk for the pigs we had and also go get the straw for their bed.
We got the milk from the Creamery. It was called separated milk as it was the butter milk left over from making butter. Daddy would give us six pence for it, but it was only thrupence so we would keep the difference for us. Tommy Nevin, or maybe Kevin, said he would not tell Daddy we were only giving him the thrupence. We would get a milk jug full. The milk jug holds about 5 gallons and we would us a pram to carte it back and forth.
We would go to the country to get the straw. Daddy would tell us not to get it from Dan Darcy but it was a long way and we would stop at Dan's to get the straw. I don't think Daddy ever knew.
We always had a few pigs and fed them slop. (Slop is left over bits of food and liquids, a messy, wet mix of various leftovers.) Mammy would sell them at the fair at Christmas and she would get a Turkey and fatten it up for christmas. I would not want to eat it as a very young child.
I have very happy memories how Daddy and Mammy would play cards and teach us how to dance. There was no TV. There was always a lot of music in Irish houses back then.
We would go to the river in the summer time and get our bath. It was Ena's job to take 4 of us girls. We would take a bottle of milk and bread and jam with us as well as a bar of soap. We were gone most of the day in the summer.
In the winter, we has a big tub put by the fire and on Saturday night we all had a bath and all clean clothes and ready for Mass on Sunday. Shoes were polished and put by the door.
