Reading at Night: 18 Nov 2018, The Heaven, York Pa

Alberta told the story of how her mother would sit up at night and read. The girls took turns in bed with her to hear the stories. Jessie was her favorite. Because of that her mother would sew Jessie a dress for each dance she went to based on her favorite song.

One of those songs was "Polkadots and Moonbeams." It was at this dance she met Louis Caslin, her future husband.

Aunt Rose: 27 Dec 2018, Phone Call

Alberta told me about Aunt Rose and how her children died. Rose used to be a registered practical nurse and would go on cruises with people to take of them. when she did this, which was often, she would leave her children with a friend.

The firend lived in a poor area of Baltimore that had no indoor toilets. It was, according to Alberta, a slum. The sewer system was simply the gutter in the street. As in older days, people would throw their slops jars, night waste, into the street. As often happens in such cases, there was a lot of sickeness. All of the children developed thyphoid. Alberta rembers they all died within a few months of each other. They are buried in a cemetary somewhere on Canton Ave.

This was around 1941 as she was 12 at the time and had babysat the children a time or two before this happened.
