March 1888

March 1st This is Annie’s birthday she is 11 years old

2nd I went to Chestertown today with my butter saw Lizzie I went to see Eddie and had a little talk with him

3rd I went to church Hill with pen this afternoon it was a pretty day and I’m enjoyed the ride I went to church Hill with pen this afternoon it was a pretty day and I enjoyed the ride

4th I went to church today we had a nice prayer and class meeting

5th Well we have had a snowy day it began early this morning We washed but did not get to put our clothes out I went a sleighing up to see Lizzie this afternoon My woman came today

6th this has been a very pretty day We put our clothes out this morning and Pen I started down to Rolf’s Wharf in the sleigh but only went a little way had to come back and go in the carriage

7th I stayed home today and sewed but went to Mr. Tuckers after supper to attend the nights society there was a good many there and we had a nice time had plenty of ice cream and cake

March 8th well I went away today for a change Lizzie and Tommy came here on their way to Beckie’s and took me with them We spent a very pleasant day and there was some talking done But coming home we met with an accident the horse choked coming up Brownie Hill and fell over throwing us out We did not get hurt but was badly frightened and had a broken carriage wheel We had to go up to Mr. Browns and get a carriage to come home in

9th I went to Chestertown today Took my butter and went to see Doctor Cooper He gave Lena some medicine for her lips

10th This has been a very pretty day Made me feel like doing spring work Miss Molly and I went to Church Hill with Pen

11th When we got up this morning it was raining but it stopped and we went to church There was no one there but Tuckers and Jester’s It began raining again this afternoon and it’s raining very hard tonight Walter and Cassie our boy and girl came home very wet

12th This has been a very stormy day It began snowing about bedtime last night blowed hard all night The snow was drifted very much this morning Miss Molly started to school in the carriage but could not get there Had to come back It has blowed hard all day and is still blowing and very cold We have not had such a day this past winter It does not seem much like spring tonight

13th It was very cold tonight Has been cold all day snowing part of the time and blowing all the time We have not had our back shutters open since Sunday The storm is drifted very much Miss Molly did not get to school today I do not know how the roads are but they could not get out of the road gate

14th March the wind is still blowing But I don’t think it is quite as cold as it was in yesterday miss Molly did not get to go to school Pin went out to see the roads he says of the snow is drifted as high as the hedge in some places there has been no school this week I had one of my poorly spells today I wrote to Kinsey’s and Aunt Rachel and Cousin Beckie today

15th This has been a very pretty day Miss Molly and Charlie went to school Mr. Townshend was there but they had no school The snow has melted some today but we cannot see that it has melted much where the drifts are There is one pile in the garden that goes over pails

16th This has been another nice day Miss Molly and Charlie went to school but there was not enough there to have school so they came back There is plenty of snow yet and mud too it has rained since supper it has been warmer today then it was yesterday

17th Well, we are still snowed in but to look out on the fields it looks as though the snow was about gone but not so on some of the roads Pen went out to try and break the road out as far as the church so we could get to town but he could not do it he had to ungear the mules the snow was so deep Eddie came home tonight Jimmy and Walter went over to town on horseback after him then they went to go across the fields Eddie has come home to stay He likes the paper mill but it is time to begin to work on the farm I got a letter from mother today

18th This has been a beautiful day but we could not go to church I will be glad when the road gets clear I went over to Mrs. Pollins today

19th March This has been another very pretty day We washed and the clothes dried nice

20th We have had quite a change in the weather since yesterday It has been raining hard all day

21st This has been a very changeable day It rained this morning then cleared off nice and was real warm and had a thunderstorm this afternoon The first one of the season

22nd We have had another changeable day it snowed right fast for awhile and blew up very cold towards night

23rd This has been a very cold day for this late in March It froze very hard last night and I have sat very close to the stove when I could today

24th When I got up this morning it was snowing right fast but it cleared up very pretty this afternoon Miss Molly Jimmy and myself all went to Chestertown this morning after the storm was most over Came back in time for dinner then went to Church Hill with Pen

25th I did not go to church today for I was poorly and was also taken with my bad feelings Had two Right bed spells in a good many light ones

26th I am still sick we did not get to wash for It has been raining all day

27th This has been another damp day and is raining fast tonight I have not been out in the kitchen since Sunday

28th I am still poorly and it has not cleared off yet Lena has been home this week on my account They washed today but could not dry them

29th The sun came out this afternoon for the first time since Sunday they got the clothes dry

30th This is Good Friday Miss Molly went to Baltimore Doctor Cooper came to see me today left me medicine Said he would be back Sunday

31st It seemed strange for me not to do any cooking today but I am still poorly
