January 1888

Jan 1st 1888 Well This is the beginning of another year and it has been a sassy day We all stayed home from church has it rained so fast we thought no one would be there it stopped before night and John took Lizzie up to his home I hope they will do well there and be happy God grant that we may all live better lives this coming year than we did last year

Jan 3rd This has been a nice day but I have been poorly all day I feel better tonight I had my strong feeling last night and one today

Jan 4th The ladies night society met here last night there were 17 members present $23 was collected we had a right nice time they never left until after 12 o'clock I went down to Rolphs Wharf this afternoon a little while

Jan 6th I want over Chestertown this afternoon to take my butter went to see Eddie He was a sleep but I awakened him and had a little talk with him This was his week for working at night He will not come home this week I have written to Pap and Aunt Rachel

Jan 7th I went to Church Hill this afternoon

Jan 8th I went to church there was not many there Lena went home with Laura Fasber

9th Miss Alice Wordel came back today to finish her weeks serving

12th It has been right cold yesterday and today Pen and I went to Mr Stearns night Lizzy Loller is staying there helping him get fixed up

Jan 14th This has been a very pretty day Pen went to Church Hill took Miss Molly I went to Chester town stayed at Mrs. Anthony’s for supper took Eddie home with me The roads are very muddy I received a letter from Annie Trump tonight

15th Pen and I took Eddie to Lizzie’s this afternoon He is to go from there to Chestertown the roads are very muddy/p>

16th We washed today Hattie helped me

17th It has been snowing most of the day

18th This was the night for the night society to meet at the Jefferson’s but it was very cold and the roads are so slippery that Pen thought we had better not go Lena started to take music lessons today from the parson

19th Mr. Jimmy Collins was here for supper He and the Mr Catlin went to the Jefferson’s last night There was not many there but he says they had a nice time

21st I did not go to Church Hill today I have been busy all day I have not seen Eddie since last Sunday Pen took the butter over to Chestertown yesterday This has been a cold day/p>

22nd This has been a very cold day I went to church but there were only a few there Mr. Stern had class We had company tonight Mr. Sterling and Mrs. Stevens and Lizzy Loller She and Miss Molly played on the Organ We spent a very pleasant evening

Jan 23rd We washed today it has been cloudy but we got most of our clothes dry by bringing some in the house

24th It has been just 21 years tonight since we were married we had company today John and Lizzie Becky and Sam Pen and I went to Mrs Leonards tonight This is been a very pretty day

Jan 25th This has been a cloudy day and it is raining fast tonight I am not very well Pen has been getting wood today

26th When we got up this morning the ground was covered with ice And after the sun was up it was a pretty sight The fields and the trees look like crystal We have been having it cold for several days

27th This has been a cold day the ground is covered with ice It is hard to travel

28th It is still very cold I think that last night was the coldest night that we have had this winter Water froze in our bed stand and it has been very cold all day and the wind blows cold tonight I got a letter from mother today Pap poorly with a bad cold

29th I went to church town today Mr. Asters preached a missionary sermon Over $27 was collected

30th This has been a warmer day and part of the time cloudy we washed and Pen and I went up to see Lizzie a little while this afternoon we also went to see about a woman to live with me this year

31st It has been warmer today I wrote to Pap and Mother tonight
